They were sending bricks down a chute when the foreman—a broad-shouldered man with a sore neck and a superstition about old basements—kicked what felt like a slab instead of rubble. The concrete gave a hollow ring; beneath it, a seam of stone had been mortared shut and sealed with something that made the air taste wrong—metallic and clean, like the inside of an old watch.
“Oi,” he said, and the others fell silent. One by one they pried. The slab lifted like a lid and let out a sound that was not wind or water but a tiny, bell-like sigh. Torchlight slid over no dust. Everything inside the cleft—a narrow, coffin-sized chamber carved into London clay—was impossibly pristine.
